Attorney-General Philip Ruddock has advised the Governor-General to disallow the ACT’s revised Civil Partnerships Bill because it still likens the union to marriage.
Mr Ruddock is against references to a formal ceremony and minors being allowed to join together with court or parental approval. He says the Government is instead focused on improving gay rights. “Our principal concern is to where we can, to remove discrimination,” he said. “We want to deal with a range of issues that discriminate against people in same-sex relationships but we don’t intend that same-sex relationships should constitute a marriage.”
But Greens Senator Bob Brown says the rejection of the Bill is discrimination in itself.
“It’s very nasty discrimination both against the ACT and against same sex partners,” he said.
Senator Brown says Mr Ruddock has not adequately explained his position. “It’s as silly as it is outrageous and it’s discriminatory but this is the level of politics that is coming from the Liberals and it’s very sad that it’s backed up by the Liberals in the ACT,” he said.
The ACT Government says it will revisit the Bill after the federal election.
